Located in one of the country's top ten neighborhoods, Spokane's Browne's Addition, this 1899 "restrained" Queen Ann Victorian has been lovingly restored. The Dora Bruce Powell Room is a second-floor, quaint, large in-bath suite, with antique queen bed nested in a lighted alcove. The room offers a distant view of Downtown Spokane's city lights that can also be enjoyed from your Jacuzzi tub, overlooking a garden. Wing-backed chairs provide comfort while reading books from the convenient barrister bookcase, or viewing in-room movies, and rents for $119/night.
The Rigby Suite, opened in fall 2013, is a larger suite, with 7' rain and jetted shower, wet bar, closet, and optional sleeping couch, so can accommodate three guests. It rents for $129/night.
Wi-Fi is provided for guest use throughout the home, and each room has an HDTV with DVD player. Continental breakfast is available and included in the rooms' pricing, with coffee/tea bar, refrigerator, video library, and a common room open 24 hours a day, just down the hall. After check-in, guests may use the private entry and will be given its combination for after-hours, and an in-room safe available for all guests who request it. Feel free to ask for our cozy flannel sheets, when visiting us in winter!
While staying at the 1899 House, guests can have as much privacy or interaction with their hosts as desired. This home is within walking distance to downtown to the east (1 mile from Riverpark Square), and Browne's Addition's historic Cannon Circle restaurants, pub, pizzeria, and Tully's, to the west (3 blocks); only a few short blocks' walk from Artfest and Elkfest in spring, Coeur d'Alene Park's gazebo concerts in summer, and the Museum of Arts and Culture, and rests in the midst of countless admirable views for the jogger or cyclist (Centennial Trail, Overlook Park). Both the Susan B. Komen and Bloomsday races go right by the house.
City transit bus is one block from the home, and if you are coming to Spokane for medical reasons, or for support for a loved one, it is located approximately one mile from Spokane's "hospital hill" Deaconess and Sacred Heart hospitals. If you are considering a sabbatical, conference, graduation, or other education-related visit, 1899 House is only two miles west of Gonzaga University, US/WSU Spokane; four miles south of Spokane Falls CC/Mukogawa Center, and nine miles south of Whitworth University. Spokane International Airport is a ten-minute drive, and Fairchild Air Force Base lies a twenty-minute drive north.
This original family home, built for the third mayor of Spokane, offers a charming combination of a gracious family home within an historic setting, with in-residence owner/innkeepers, and the privacy of one's own room and bath, with easy access to the small conveniences of home and personal privacy. It is "homey" yet elegant, comfortable, yet personal to each guest, and presents a unique opportunity to feel "at home" while far from one's own.
